Why microneedling is a perfect summer treatment...

Summer is here and a lot of us show a little more skin when the days get longer, and temps rise.  Enter microneedling... While this is an amazing treatment for the face, neck, and chest; it can be done on most all parts of your body.

Microneedling, or Collagen Induction Therapy, is a treatment that helps your body to make tighter, healthier skin, naturally.   It is done by using a pen-like device with tiny, surgical steel needles that barely puncture the skin.  Your body’s response to these microscopic injuries is where the magic happens.  Anytime our protective “skin” barrier is compromised, our body activates a natural healing process that actually creates new collagen and elastin.  Hence, microneedling is an amazing treatment for dull, uneven skin tone or crepiness, scarring, stretch marks, sun damage, and wrinkles.  It is also powerful at treating large pore size.

Prior to the procedure, a serum is applied to the skin that uses these tiny needle sticks as a vehicle to penetrate the epidermis.  My personal favorite is hyaluronic acid, with its hydrating properties, but any number of serums can be used:  stabilized vitamin C,  anti-aging serum with peptides and growth factors, PRP (another personal favorite. . . platelet rich plasma, your body’s very own blood components), and the list goes on.

The procedure is painless.  A topical anesthetic is applied to the skin prior to treatment as well.  I always use a topical because the pen-device used is a medical grade device that does penetrate deeper into the skin than the “dermaroller”.  Results are more pronounced and the risk for infection is much less than with an at-home roller, which can be very unsanitary.

After the treatment, your skin will be somewhat red or pink (unless you opt to add on some red LED light therapy to quickly take that away) similar to facial flushing, that lasts a few hours to a couple of days.  Occasionally, your skin may be a little flaky for a few days post-treatment, but overall it will look healthier immediately.  Final results are dependent on initial skin condition and for most people, the results can continue to improve over the next several months as your skin naturally forms collagen and elastin.  Treatments work best in a series of 2-4, over several months, but just one treatment will have you coming back for more!

I have had some incredible results with a lot of my clients who have opted for multiple treatments.  My happiest clients have been the ones who “trust the process” and have been able to see stretch marks fade, scars minimized, and overall smoother skin tone.

Individuals of all skin color are candidates for microneedling, since often lasers and medium depths peels aren’t always appropriate for clients with darker skin tones.

Microneedling has been around for quite some time, but it is currently one of the hottest trends in aesthetics.  I really can’t say one bad thing about this treatment.  And hey, did I mention it’s also GREAT for hair loss/scalp treatments?  That’s a whole other blog!!!

When summer rolls around, most of us are out of commission for chemical peels, which call for strict sun protection for 10-14 days at minimum.  Microneedling is an outstanding alternative to keep your skin plump, hydrated, and rejuvenated during the summer months.
